Attendance Information
What should I do if I'm late? What consequences are there?
- If late, students should check in with our office manager in the office, then go to class. It's always best to call ahead if possible (818-735-3217).
Consequences for being late:
- loss of one-half hour toward credit in the course;
- required attendance at Friday Study Hall and completion of missing work unless it is the sole tardy for the week AND all other requirements are met.
What should I do if I'm absent? What consequences are there?
- As soon as possible:
- Parent or guardian should call the office number (818-735-3217);
- Students should follow the teacher's directions on how to get and complete any missing work. This will be communicated during your first week of school.
Consequences for any type of absence:
- loss of the day's class hours toward credit in the course;
- required attendance at Friday Study Hall and completion of missing work, which may result in hours earned back.
What happens if my absence is not called in?
- Office manager goes to each classroom during Period 1 to take attendance. If a student is not present, she will call home and request an update. If no one verifies the absence, it will count as an unexcused absence.
If tardy it will be counted as a:
- Tardy -- if less than 30 minutes late (resulting in a 30 minutes loss of time toward credit);
- 30 minutes + tardy -- if later (resulting in a 60 - 90 minute loss of time toward credit); or
- Absence -- if missing an entire class period (resulting in a loss of all time for that class).
What is the difference between an excused absence, an unexcused absence, and a truancy?
- An excused absence = illness or medical appointment, quarantine issued by the County, funeral for immediate family, court dates, spending time with a member of the family who is in the military, or other reason previously approved by the principal. These absences must be verified by a parent/guardian
- An unexcused absence = reasons other than those listed above that is verified by a parent/guardian
- A truancy = absence due to refusal to come to school and/or one not verified by a parent/guardian
Can I make up work if I have an unexcused absence or a truancy?
- Yes. You must check for assignments upon your return to school and get work done by the due date.
What happens if I am frequently late and/or absent?
- Frequent absences will result in:
- a meeting with the counselor and/or administrator to discuss and solve any issues in attendance. the SART process
- loss of credit
Frequent tardiness will result in:
- notification of parent when they reach 5;
- parent/teacher/principal meeting when they reach 8; and
- drop from class when they reach 11 with credit accrued.
The biggest consequences are that students lose learning and productive credit hours. This may result in students being required to retake the class, attend summer school, or graduate later than expected.
